Wedding Photos Before The Ceremony – Pros and Cons

Your wedding day is one of the most important and possibly, one of the most hectic days of your life. Everything has to be planned perfectly, time has to be managed to the second, and the unexpected has to be dealt with in record time. This is why an increasing number of brides are doing the majority of the posed, family, and bride and groom wedding photos prior to the ceremony. Even thought it breaks from the traditional approach, you’ll find that it helps to make your day much less chaotic. As a Spokane, WA and Eugene, OR wedding photographer, I definitely recommend this practice, but there are always Pros and Cons to consider before you make the final decision.

Pros to Wedding Photos Prior to the Ceremony

  • Hair and makeup is fresh and crisp. If you’re one who tends to cry at weddings, your wedding is probably no exception and we don’t want to mess up your eye makeup before the portraits.
  • The more time you have set aside, the more photos you get. Limiting yourself to a rushed hour between the ceremony and the reception is stressful and reduces the amount of quality photos you will get with your spouse.
  • Prior to the ceremony everyone (bridal party and immediate family) is in one place. If you do the photos post-ceremony, people tend to wander off, visit with friends, or complete important tasks prior to the reception.

Cons to Wedding Photos Before the Ceremony

  • Couples forego the traditional approach and cast aside the superstitions involved with seeing the bride before the ceremony.
  • Some couples fear that the magic of the “first look” isn’t the same as when the groom sees the bride walking down the aisle for the first time. Although, a pre-ceremony ‘unveiling’ ceremony can help to capture that special moment.
  • The photo time between the ceremony and reception is skipped, taking away a sometimes much needed “break” from the festivities.

Are Pre-Ceremony Wedding Photos Worth It? You Decide

Ultimately, when all is said and done, the choice is yours… It’s your wedding day after all, right? My goal as a Spokane, WA and Eugene, OR wedding photographer is to give the best advice I can to help your special day run smoothly. I always respect a bride and grooms wishes and will support any decision they choose.
