Senior Portraits – Tips, Tricks & What to Wear!

LaDuke Photography Locations SM

Hello Class of 2018 Seniors, thanks for checking out LaDuke Photography! As a portrait photographer with over a decade of experience I know a thing or two about how to create great photos that really express who you are.

I have done many senior portrait sessions and every shoot is different. In order to make things go as smoothly as possible I’ve compiled some tips and tricks you can use to prepare for your session. We’ve only got a couple hours to to make amazing photographs so coming prepared is going to keep things flowing smoothly.

Pre-planning:

When you book your session let me know what you’re into.  Are you involved with any sports or clubs at school? Do you have a cat, dog, horse or turtle that your photos will be incomplete without? What do you enjoy doing outside of school? These are all things that we can use to make your photos unique to you. It’s unlikely that you’ll ever have another opportunity like this to do a photo session that so boldly encompasses exactly who you are. Do you love hunting and fishing? Are you captain of the volleyball team? Have you been doing something crazy like pyrotechnics your whole life? These things are an important part of who you are, why not include them?

What to wear:

  • Avoid strong patterns (plaid, paisley, overly floral blouses, etc). They can be distracting. If you want to wear patterns layer them under a jacket or blouse.
  • Avoid BRIGHT colors. Neon hues will reflect off of your face making you unnaturally colored.
  • Darker colors such as black, navy and dark green will slim you. Shirts with 3/4 or long sleeves are also slimming if you are self conscious about your arms.
  • Light colors such as white/beige or light grey can dominate the photo and make you look ghostly if you are already pale or they will make you appear orange if you have tan skin. – Pair them with a darker color for best effect.
  • Bring at least 3 different shirts, jackets or dresses. If you can dress in layers it will add variety. Don’t forget letter jackets and sports uniforms.
  • Accessorize! Sunglasses, bracelets, scarves and hats all personalize your ‘look’. Pay attention to how your shoes go with your outfits – they will be in some photos.

Make-Up:

Less is more. Wear it light and natural for your session. Go easy on the eye make up especially. Also no glitter! It will reflect light and leave you with shiny little pock marks. Some eye make-up has a certain ‘shimmer’ which is okay, but body glitter and lip gloss tends to reflect light unevenly. Consider bringing a matte or transparent face powder to cut down on shiny skin.

Posing/Locations:

Don’t stress over posing, you might practice your smile in the mirror that morning, but otherwise I’ll help you pose once the session begins. The general rule is, “If it feels awkward, you’ll look awkward.” Always look for a comfortable natural feeling pose as close to what the photographer suggests as you can.
As far as locations go, if you have a place that is special to you like the high school track, your favorite park or your family’s own backyard speak up! I’ve got a ton of great suggestions from the rustic charm of the old buildings in Harrisburg to the top of Spencer Butte, I’m always up for an adventure!

The day before your session & morning of:

  • Drink plenty of water. Being hydrated makes your skin vibrant and fresh and will ward off dehydration headaches.
  • Get a good nights rest the night before to avoid tired eyes.
  • If you aren’t feeling well please reschedule – You need to feel your best to look your best!
  • Eat a small meal and bring a light snack prior, it will help stave off hunger but not leave you feeling bloated.

Collage 2018 SMI realize this is a lot of information to digest, just take a deep breath and know that I am here the whole time to help you out. Let’s go out and have some fun while taking memorable senior portraits that you will be proud to show off!

Smith Rock State Park Engagement Photos

Smith Rock Oregon Engagement (3) LaDuke Photography Locations SMSmith Rock State Park is on pretty much every Oregon photographer’s bucket list of pretty places to put their clients. I was so excited to work with J & R on their engagement photos and being able to meet up at Smith Rock on my way north to Spokane for a wedding was perfect. We wandered around the upper parts of the park and created some wonderful images. If you think these are pretty just wait until you see the wedding. They are tying the knot at Heceta Head Lighthouse on the Oregon Coast north of Florence in August.

Village Green Bride and Bridesmaid Photos – Cottage Grove, Oregon

LaDuke Photography Locations SM

Kari and her bridal party got ready for their rural covered bridge wedding at The Village Green Resort in Cottage Grove, just south of Eugene, Oregon and I was thrilled to photograph the process. I have attended many events at Village Green and I hadn’t had a chance to work with the venue until now. It was absolutely beautiful and the staff was incredibly polite and helpful. If you are looking for a classy venue that is easy to find right off of I-5 check them out! We had a wonderful time wandering around the gardens taking photos.

Keep your eyes peeled for a post or gallery from the actual wedding. The weather was amazing, the vendors were awesome and everything was super smooth thanks largely in part to the superior wedding coordination skills of Kandice at Green-Eyed Girl Productions. Look her up and let her know Lacey sent you!

University of Oregon Elopement – Schnitzer Art Museum

LaDuke Photography Locations SM

The Jordan Schnitzer Art Museum on the University of Oregon Campus made for a beautiful backdrop for C & D’s fall elopement. Weddings don’t have to be a huge event with lots of people and expensive stressful decisions to make. These two lovely people decided all they needed were each other (and their adorable kiddo who was a real trooper despite having a tummy ache). My 2nd shooter and I had a wonderful time capturing this quick intimate wedding and can’t wait for our next elopement!

Did you get engaged this holiday season? LaDuke Photography wants to help!

LaDuke Photography Locations SMCongratulations to all of the lovely ladies and gents who popped the question, or eagerly responded, “YES!” this holiday season. I am so excited for all of you! As a wedding photographer here in Oregon (and traveling to Spokane monthly) I have a great grasp on what needs to happen next. I’m going to share a few links that you should save for your planning process. put-a-ring-on-it-laduke-photography

First things first, you’re going to need to pick a wedding date. Saturdays are far and away the most popular date, but did you know that if you get married on an ‘off’ day you can save up to HALF on things like a venue, photography, DJs, hair and make up – pretty much anything that isn’t a physical good like food or cake.  This is because vendors want to fill up the free days on their calendar.

Once you have a date and a venue it’s time to get busy. The next two things you need are a photographer to get the ball rolling on engagement photos, save the dates and planning for an awesome wedding! The other optional and highly recommended vendor that I recommend is a wedding planner. If you can afford it, do it! Here in Eugene I recommend Green Eyed Girl Productions and Embellished Occasions. Let them know Lacey sent you!

When it comes to choosing your photographer I hope you will give me a chance to grab a coffee and chat with you face to face. Choosing a wedding photographer that you really ‘click’ with should be a priority. Your wedding is important and we spend the whole day with you. Read more about choosing the photographer for you here.

You may want to check out my Engagement Photo Gallery. Here you can decide if you want to hire me for Engagement Photos al a carte or if you want to tie them into your wedding package.

If you want the best deal you’ll head over to my Wedding Photography Page. Here you will find a portfolio of my favorite images, my packages, and my pricing for summer Saturday weddings. If you are getting married November – May or on a day other than Saturday don’t forget to ask about my off season discounts.

While we’re at it, how about you get to know me a little better. I’m on several social media platforms that I update regularly.

I’d love to make some new friends and help make your wedding magical in the process!

Oak Knoll Acres is a beautiful wedding venue a little ways off the beaten path near Pleasant Hill, Oregon. W&C are a sweet couple who are all about family, friends and having a good time. Bridal Portraits – Eugene, Oregon – Wedding Photo Re-Shoot

LaDuke Photography Locations SM Weddings are wonderful life events that most people have captured by professional photographers to ensure that their precious memories are preserved exactly as they remember them. Unfortunately sometimes for whatever reason this does not happen. Cue the increasingly popular Bridal Session! Whether you let a friend take the reigns on your wedding photography or it poured on your wedding day, or because you just wanted a fresh location bridal portraits are a fun way to recapture some of that magic. Eugene Bridal Portraits LaDukePhoto.Com-9-3K&R decided that they wanted a few more photos than when they received with their wedding so they put on their wedding clothes and we went out to their back yard for some cute posed photos.

St. John’s Cathedral & Davenport Hotel in Spokane – Low Light Wedding Photography

LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (9)LaDuke Photography Locations SMJordan and Ashley came all the way from Washington DC to tie the knot at St. John’s Cathedral on Spokane’s south hill. Ashley is a Spokane native who actually knows several of my other clients which made photographing their wedding a real treat.

LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (16)LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (2)LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (3) Catholic weddings are a favorite of mine because I really appreciate good architecture and old churches have plenty to spare. It makes it worth dealing with very low lighting and other challenging photography conditions when I get to present my clients with bright happy photos from a venue that they were already aware was dark! Indoor photos pose a special set of challenges to the professional photographer because you need to be able to stop motion, keep photos sharp and still properly expose without driving the guests crazy with extensive flash set ups. LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (10)  LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (8) LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (7)  LaDuke Photo Spokane Wedding (4)After the ceremony at St. John’s we headed downtown to The Davenport Hotel for another challenging and super rewarding location – The Marie Antoinette Ballroom. Why You SHOULD Feed Your Photographer – A Slightly Biased Opinion

LaDuke Photography Locations SM

This is in direct response to this post on PetaPixel and the original post that it references from Brides Magazine. If you haven’t seen these posts read before you continue. If you want a really really quick summation of it Brides Magazine doesn’t think you should feed your photographer. I wholeheartedly disagree. Check out the poll on the PetaPixel post, I’m not the only one.

Umm, ‘scuse me? Anyone who has seen me work a wedding knows that I EARN that meal. I’m not just standing around snapping a few candid pictures and flipping you a memory card at the end of the day.

Feed The Photographer

Wedding photography starts MONTHS before the wedding day with consults, estimates, contracts, engagement photos, wedding products etc. Follow up consults before the big day have to happen at least once, sometimes 2-3 times. Then I come to your rehearsal and help you make sure it goes off without a hitch. This is all before the wedding.

On the day of I show up, camera in hand and start work immediately. Not only am I taking photos but I am helping clients make decisions, I’m fielding questions left and right, making sure you are eating, hydrated and that Great Aunt Millie isn’t hovering over you stressing you out because she wishes you would have worn white instead of ivory. Hiding the bride from the groom, motivating the groomsmen to get ready, helping with finishing touches on decor. (I KNOW that more than one of you has seen me setting up chairs and tables, putting out flowers, organizing desert tables, directing traffic, etc.) This is all BEFORE the first look!

Feed Your Photographer

I realize that weddings are expensive and catering can cost an arm and a leg to get what you want, but please consider how hard your photographer is working for you. Feed us what you are eating. We really appreciate it. I may still be bitter about the warm egg salad sandwich and warm water that I was ordered to eat outside in August, but I remember the plates of BBQ, roast pork, even modest sandwich bars that I have been invited to share. I have clients who are so wonderful that they have invited me to sit at the head table with them and chat while we ate.

I could go on for another three paragraphs about the fact that I routinely travel 500+ miles for weddings. That coupled with the fact that the real work starts AFTER the wedding when I go home and immediately back up 6,000 photos, make copies and back them up again (Usually getting me to bed by 4am on wedding nights) – I then spend hours and hours and hours sorting, editing and going back to remove that stress zit from Every. Stinkin’. Photo.

I think by this time we are friends, treat me like one. I’ve already seen you in your underwear, climbed halfway under your dress to fix your bustle (Where the heck did your bridesmaids go!?) Consoled a crying drunk person that I’ve never met, hefted around 30lbs of camera gear all day and taught 8 grown men how to pin a boutonniere. I am a photographer, but I am also so much more.

Wedding ShotSki

If you beg and plead I will try your signature wedding shot – after I’m off the clock! (Huckleberry was so fitting for Priest Lake!)

I love my clients, you are wonderful, and save one instance you have all fed me. Pass this on to any misguided friends who take what wedding magazines say as the gospel. The “HAnger” (Hunger + Anger) is real. People perform so much better when they are satisfied and cared for.
