Superhero Wedding at The Lafayette Park Hotel – California

I love my job. I live for weddings that are as awesome, fun and beautiful as Michael and Missy’s San Fransico Bay Area wedding. The Lafayette Park Hotel is a gorgeous California wedding venue. The courtyards were full of fun little details and unique wedding photo opportunities.  Getting to know the wedding party I could tell we were all going to have a great time. I didn’t realize how much until I arrived on the wedding day though. I didn’t encounter the usual hustle and bustle of the wedding day. Everyone was calm and cool, plus the groomsmen had a unique idea up their sleeves – literally! The groomsmen were in superhero shirts under their tuxes. Yes, I know, Spiderman is a Marvel comic, but hey, you have to work with what you’ve got. The superhero  groomemen photo managed to get over 1 million views despite (or possibly because of) our faux pas! Romantic formal portraits were followed by a short and sweet ceremony and an awesome reception full of fun and dancing. I look forward to expanding my coverage area to include more Central California wedding photography! Thanks again to the Mackell & Wickman families, you sure do throw an amazing party!

Football Senior Portraits in Eugene, Oregon

Senior portrait season is in full swing and there are few things I love more than taking creative senior portraits here in Eugene. I love being able to encompass a bit of who my senior portrait clients are into their personalized session. Football and other sports portraits are really popular subjects to include. Last week I got to go out with Tyler from North Eugene High School and do a sunset photo session. He’s the quarterback for the team and is an avid University of Oregon football fan along with his many other hobbies. Since he has a two part package we’re hoping to incorporate his love of scuba diving into the next set along with his more traditional senior portraits. If you’re looking for a chance to take some unique senior portraits and have some fun doing it contact me today. I have a skills and knowledge to create images for you that you will be proud to show off for years to come.

Skinners Butte Wedding Photos – The Buchers

I’ve been so busy photographing weddings in Eugene and Spokane this summer that I have somewhat fallen behind on sharing the big pretty blog posts full of creative fun wedding photos. Pinterest junkies rejoice! I’ve got some great eye candy from Rachel and Oskar’s wedding earlier this summer.  We’ve got feather bouquets, intimate portraits in mossy trees, the groomsmen acting silly, and a great big wedding party in a gorgeous church! The wedding was held at Wesley United Methodist and the formal wedding portraits were taken at the top of Skinners Butte.  The bride and groom left their reception at Corbin Center with a fun exit with bubbles even! Eugene is such a beautiful city and even though the weather threatened us right up until the ceremony we had a great time. I can’t wait to do more weddings here in the Eugene & Springfield area!

Eugene Relay for Life – Mascots for a Cure

The American Cancer Society’s Eugene/Springfield  Relay for Life at Willamette High School is one of the largest in the country and this weekend we at Lacey LaDuke Photography had the opportunity to donate our time and services to photographing a special part of the event. It is a cancer fundraiser called “Mascots for a Cure”. All of your favorite mascots from around Oregon are going to be there from UO’s Puddles the Duck right down to Matty Mattress from Mattress Mania! Derek Zinser, the entertainment chair for Relay is attempting to bring together enough mascots to challenge the world record of 166 mascots gathered in one place. In doing this he is hoping to raise $25,000 for Relay for Life and the ACS.

My role in all of this is to be part of a very talented team of photographers who are taking photos of participants with the mascots & the mascots general events. Prints and digital downloads can be purchased through the website at www.mascotsforacure.com. Proceeds are being donated to the ACS and Relay for life to go toward Derek’s goal of $25,000. The mascots are available from 12-3pm today only so come on out and get your photo taken with your favorites!

If you picked up my card at the event and have any other photographic needs don’t forget to ask about my “Mascots” discount! If you didn’t participate, but would still like to make a donation visit the Eugene/Springfield Relay for Life website.

How to Photograph Fireworks

Have you ever tried to snap a picture of a fireworks display and ended up with a bright rainbow squiggle or completely dark frame? Photographing fireworks is a bit of a daunting task for some.  Once you know the basics you will be able to capture the classic images and have the skills to experiment and make them creatively unique to you. Below you’ll find a list to get you on your way, so grab your camera and head out to Alton Baker, Island Park or The Eugene Rodeo and hone your firework photography skills!

  • Bring a tripod. Firework photos require long exposures, sometimes several seconds. If you are trying to hold your camera by hand you’ll end up with lots of brightly colored squiggles from the movement, but no breath-taking fireworks.  Setting the tripod so that it is secure is also important. Keeping the legs short and level will help avoid camera shake from wind or from you adjusting the camera itself.
  • Manually Focus. There are two main ways to go about this. One method is to autofocus on something that is a great distance away, such as buildings that will be in your shot or a bright star, or even on the first set of fireworks and then switch it over to manual. The other way (and my preferred method) is to turn the lens to manual focus and turn the focus ring to infinity (∞) and leave it there. Fireworks are generally far enough away that this will work just fine.
  • Use low ISO. This is your camera’s light sensitivity. Set it low to a number between 100-200 to avoid getting grainy noisy photos. This will also help force a longer shutter speed if your camera does not have manual controls.
  • Slow Shutter Speed. If your camera has manual controls set it to Shutter priority (Tv) or to Manual (M) and select a shutter speed that is a few seconds long. If you are setting your aperture in manual f/8-f/16 will usually serve you well and can be adjusted as needed.  If your camera has a Bulb (B) setting and you have a remote definitely use this. Set your aperture between f/8 and f/16 and open the shutter to capture the entire firework and then click the button to close. Adjust aperture settings as needed for desired brightness (f/5.6 will give you brighter skies, f/16 will be much darker)
  • Remote/Timer. If you have a remote for your camera use it. If not set the 2 second timer. by doing this you avoid any camera shake that may happen when you press the shutter button.
  • No Flash. Unless you are lighting a subject in your foreground I would advise you to turn it off. Even if you ARE lighting a foreground subject you may want to use a flashlight rather than a flash for a more interesting painted effect.

Last but not least once you’ve had a chance to figure out what settings you really like take some time to get creative. Think about interesting compositions, light painting your foreground or maybe adding longer or shorter exposures to manipulate your images. Flexing your creative muscles to personalize your images is one of the greatest joys of photography. Good luck and Happy Independence day!!

Hendricks Park Engagement Session with Donia & Mike

Hendricks Park is one of the best places to do engagement photos in Eugene, so when Donia came to me to plan her engagement session we easily agreed to meet up in the Rhododendron Gardens. There’s a nice romantic feeling walking down the neatly manicured paths that makes you feel like you have the place to yourself – and we pretty much did on a weekday evening! We took our time walking and talking and in the process got some amazing photos that really captured her & Mike’s feelings toward each other. Being able to have time to really get to know who you’re working with makes everything run smoothly and ensures you get the photos that really show emotion. This is why I make every effort to get to know my clients and I encourage them to get to know me. This is especially important of engagement sessions because when your wedding rolls around you already know what it is like to work with me. We’ve developed a rapport and it’s not like you’re starting at square one with a strange photographer on what is already a stressful day. I am so happy to have had a chance to get Donia and Mike in front of my camera before their wedding this March – It’s going to make the post-reception bridal photos a breeze!

Strick Wedding at Red Barn Farms in Colton, Washington

It’s been a busy couple of weeks, but I’m finally home and ready to share! I ended my two weeks of working out of town with John and Alli’s wonderful wedding in Colton Washington. The Ceremony took place at St. Gall Church and the reception was held at Red Barn Farms. The weather was perfect, the food  by Happy Day Catering was amazing and everything went so smoothly! Between the unveiling ceremony at Red Barn Farms, the Catholic mass and wedding ceremony at St. Gall, posed photos with the Impala on the Palouse and the amazing reception with the super fun and energetic Dudley Manlove Quartet I’ve got so many images to sort through and share, but here’s a little teaser!

Rachelle’s Mirabeau Park Maternity Session

Maternity photography is a fun chance to capture a unique experience, but that hasn’t always been en vogue. I think there is only one photo of my mother pregnant with me and it’s at her baby shower. She thinks I’m crazy every time I say “I’m headed out to do pregnancy photos in Eugene this evening!” Yet, every time I whip out the finished product she gets nostalgic and tells me, “Well, that’s not what I think of when I think of pregnancy photos!” Bringing new life into this world is a beautiful thing and that brief period at the very beginning of your baby’s life should be captured and preserved for you to look back on. Maternity photos are a reminder of that magical time!

I’m glad Rachelle booked me when she did, a happy healthy Kristen Mae showed up a *little* early – I guess she wanted to attend the baby shower! Congrats on the new addition Rachelle and Tyler, I can’t wait to meet her!

Landscape Photography in the Utah Desert

The desert around Moab, Utah is one of my favorite places in the Western United States. There are so many formations and textures and gorgeous vistas! I was lucky to get the chance to head to Arches, Canyonlands and Dead Horse Point State Park to do some fine art photography last week. Since I am in Spokane for work this week I can’t share everything from the trip, but I wanted to give you guys a little teaser! If you follow me on Instagram (Name: LaDukePhoto) or follow me on Facebook you can see a few more to tide you over until the rest are posted.

Megan and Quinton’s Spokane Skate Park Graffiti Wedding

Urban graffiti wedding photos? Well, you don’t see that every day! Megan and Quinton gave me the awesome opportunity to capture something truly unique prior to their wedding at La Belle Vie in Spokane Valley! When our mutual friend Tyler sent them my way I couldn’t wait for their wedding day to happen. They told me right off the bat that they wanted some unconventional wedding photos in addition to the traditional poses. I couldn’t argue with that! Over the course of the last six months or so Megan, Quinton and I have been exchanging photos of graffiti under bridges and down dark alleyways. Not your standard couple at the altar poses. As a creative mind I loved every moment of it! We met up at The Spokane Parkade for an unveiling ceremony and then booked it over to Spokane’s UTF (Under The Freeway) Skate Park before their beautiful ceremony at La Belle Vie in Spokane Valley. I’m hoping to have a complete wrap upposted soon, but until then please enjoy these unique wedding photos!
