Football Senior Portraits in Eugene, Oregon

Senior portrait season is in full swing and there are few things I love more than taking creative senior portraits here in Eugene. I love being able to encompass a bit of who my senior portrait clients are into their personalized session. Football and other sports portraits are really popular subjects to include. Last week I got to go out with Tyler from North Eugene High School and do a sunset photo session. He’s the quarterback for the team and is an avid University of Oregon football fan along with his many other hobbies. Since he has a two part package we’re hoping to incorporate his love of scuba diving into the next set along with his more traditional senior portraits. If you’re looking for a chance to take some unique senior portraits and have some fun doing it contact me today. I have a skills and knowledge to create images for you that you will be proud to show off for years to come.

Senior Portrait Photo Tips

Hello Class of 2013 Seniors! As an experienced Eugene portrait photographer who loves doing creative senior portraits I know a thing or two about how to create great photos that really express who you are.

I have done many senior portrait sessions and every shoot is different. In order to make things go as smoothly as possible I’ve compiled a short list of steps you can take prior to your session. We’ve only got a couple hours to to make amazing photographs so coming prepared is going to be vital!

Pre-planning:

When you book your session let me know the things that interest you. Are you involved with any sports or clubs at school? Do you have a favorite pet you want to bring along? What do you enjoy doing outside of school? These are all things that we can use to make your photos unique to you. It’s unlikely that you’ll ever have another opportunity like this to do a photo session that so boldly encompasses exactly who you are. Do you love mountain biking? Are you captain of the debate team? Have you been doing gymnastics your whole life? These things define you as a person, why not include them?

What to wear:

  • Avoid strong patterns (plaid, paisley, overly floral blouses, etc). They can be distracting. If you want to wear patterns layer them under a jacket or blouse.
  • Darker colors such as black, navy and dark green will slim you. Shirts with 3/4 or long sleeves are also slimming.
  • Light colors such as white/beige or light grey can dominate the photo and make you look ghostly if you are already pale or they will make you appear orange if you have tan skin.
  • Bring at least 3 different shirts, jackets or dresses. If you can dress in layers it will add variety. Don’t forget letter jackets and sports uniforms.
  • Accessorize! Sunglasses, bracelets, scarves and hats all personalize your ‘look’. Pay attention to how your shoes go with your outfits – they will be in some photos.

Make-Up:

Less is more. Wear it light and natural for your session. Go easy on the eye make up especially. Also NO glitter! It will reflect light and leave you with shiny little pock marks. Some eye make-up has a certain ‘shimmer’ which is okay, but body glitter and lip gloss tends to reflect light unevenly. Consider bringing a matte or transparent face powder to cut down on shiny skin.

Posing/Locations:

Don’t stress over posing, you might practice your smile in the mirror that morning, but otherwise I’ll help you pose once the session begins. The general rule is, “If it feels awkward, you’ll look awkward.” Always look for a comfortable natural feeling pose as close to what the photographer suggests as you can.
As far as locations go, if you have a place that is special to you like the high school track, your favorite park or your family’s own backyard speak up! I’ve got a ton of great suggestions from Alton Baker, to the top of Spencer Butte or even in an urban setting like downtown Eugene or Springfield.

The day before your session & morning of:

  • Drink plenty of water. Being hydrated makes your skin vibrant and fresh and will ward off dehydration headaches.
  • Get a good nights rest the night before to avoid tired eyes.
  • If you aren’t feeling well please reschedule – You need to feel your best to look your best!
  • Eat a small meal and bring a light snack prior, it will help stave off hunger but not leave you feeling bloated.

Coeur d’Alene Senior Portrait Session

Senior portrait season is upon us! As a senior portrait photographer the thought of winter ending and spring finally taking over makes me giddy because it can only mean one thing – It’s senior season! A couple of weeks ago I had the pleasure of doing senior portraits for my last class of 2012 graduate of the year. Kailee is graduating from Wallace high School this year and then she’s hoping to head off to Las Vegas for Cosmetology school.  We had a great time playing along the banks of Coeur d’Alene Lake at Tubbs Hill. Once we’d finished exploring along the water we grabbed an outfit change and headed into downtown Coeur d’Alene for some urban scenery. Being able to get such a diverse set of locations in such a small area is one of my favorite things about doing senior portraits in Coeur d’Alene. My time slots for Spokane and Coeur d’alene are limited this season so please inquire early for my availability!

Senior Portrait Tips

Senior Portrait season is just starting and I wanted to post a few suggestions on how to prepare for your senior portrait photo shoot. For most of you it’s the first real photo session you’ve had aside from sitting in front of the camera for that awful yearbook shot that’s been on your ASB card for the last 3 years. Now is your time to shine. You get to express yourself through your photos and say, “This is me!”

This is where the fun starts, as an experienced senior portrait photographer from the Spokane area I have shot many seniors and every shoot is different. We’ve only got an afternoon together for me to get to know you and tailor your photos to express exactly who you are. These aren’t your run of the mill “lean against a tree and smile” photos like your parents sported. You’re guaranteed a superior product that you will look back on fondly for years. In order to make things run smoothly on the day of your shoot there are a few steps you can take ahead of time.

Pre-planning:

Make a list of what school based activities you want to highlight:

  • Sports, art, band, theater, math team, foreign languages, debate, ROTC, etc are all great. It doesn’t matter what it is, if you are proud of it we want to show case it.

Make a list of outside interests:

  • Biking, boarding, horseback riding, skiing, fashion, building models, cooking, playing video games, walking your dog, volunteer work, church, etc. Whatever defines you as a person is an important element in your portrait session.

Outfit Planning:

  • Keep it simple and classy. Darker colors help slim, white/beige/grey can dominate a photo and make you look ghostly pale. Patterns can be distracting.
  • Plan on bringing at least 3 different tops, jackets or dresses. Bring letter jackets or sports uniforms if you have them.
  • Pay attention to accessories. Sunglasses, bracelets, belts, etc. will make the pictures more personalized.

Make-Up:

  • Girls, believe me when I say less is more. Don’t get all glammed up, wear it light and make sure it compliments all of the outfits that you chose.
  • No glitter! In photos it tends to reflect light and create little white spots, same goes for super shiny lip gloss. Stick to matte or transparent face powder to cut that shiny greasy look.

Posing/Locations:

  • Look at your friend’s portraits and yearbook photos from the years before you and   think about the various poses and what interests you. If you see a photo you are really excited about it let me know and we’ll try our best to replicate something similar.
  • If there is a place that is special to you then let me know and we’ll see about shooting there, whether it be an urban setting, your favorite farm, the lake where your family has a cabin or just your favorite park I want the location to be comfortable for you. If you have no preference I have plenty of suggestions as well.

The day before your session & morning of:

  • Drink lots of water to make sure you are hydrated; your skin will thank you.
  • Make sure you are well rested.
  • If you aren’t feeling your best then reschedule, it will reflect in the pictures.
  • Eat a small meal and bring a light snack so you aren’t bloated but aren’t starving.
  • Come ready to have a fun session and make some awesome images.

Hayley
