Rustic Farm Wedding in Harrisburg, Oregon

Harrisburg, Oregon is a beautiful location for a great rustic wedding right near Eugene, Oregon. I jumped at the chance to work with Mike and Holli for their DIY backyard wedding on his grandparent’s farm. They came from Baker City all the way to Mike’s home town of Harrisburg to tie the knot with their family. They utilized the farm house as well as the yard outside for the ceremony and reception. The ceremony was officiated by family, the wedding party was made up of their kids and other family members. The whole thing was very family centered.Oh and the food? To die for! I must have eaten a pound of cheese, crackers and smoked fish!

I’m so grateful that they let me steal them away for their posed photos. We went right down to the riverfront in Harrisburg and did their posed bridal portraits at the gazebo and in front of some of the super awesome vintage buildings on the waterfront. Peeling paint, old bricks and empty streets made for some very unique wedding photos. I had a great time working with them and I can’t wait for my next country wedding here in Oregon.

Superhero Wedding at The Lafayette Park Hotel – California

I love my job. I live for weddings that are as awesome, fun and beautiful as Michael and Missy’s San Fransico Bay Area wedding. The Lafayette Park Hotel is a gorgeous California wedding venue. The courtyards were full of fun little details and unique wedding photo opportunities.  Getting to know the wedding party I could tell we were all going to have a great time. I didn’t realize how much until I arrived on the wedding day though. I didn’t encounter the usual hustle and bustle of the wedding day. Everyone was calm and cool, plus the groomsmen had a unique idea up their sleeves – literally! The groomsmen were in superhero shirts under their tuxes. Yes, I know, Spiderman is a Marvel comic, but hey, you have to work with what you’ve got. The superhero  groomemen photo managed to get over 1 million views despite (or possibly because of) our faux pas! Romantic formal portraits were followed by a short and sweet ceremony and an awesome reception full of fun and dancing. I look forward to expanding my coverage area to include more Central California wedding photography! Thanks again to the Mackell & Wickman families, you sure do throw an amazing party!

Skinners Butte Wedding Photos – The Buchers

I’ve been so busy photographing weddings in Eugene and Spokane this summer that I have somewhat fallen behind on sharing the big pretty blog posts full of creative fun wedding photos. Pinterest junkies rejoice! I’ve got some great eye candy from Rachel and Oskar’s wedding earlier this summer.  We’ve got feather bouquets, intimate portraits in mossy trees, the groomsmen acting silly, and a great big wedding party in a gorgeous church! The wedding was held at Wesley United Methodist and the formal wedding portraits were taken at the top of Skinners Butte.  The bride and groom left their reception at Corbin Center with a fun exit with bubbles even! Eugene is such a beautiful city and even though the weather threatened us right up until the ceremony we had a great time. I can’t wait to do more weddings here in the Eugene & Springfield area!

Strick Wedding at Red Barn Farms in Colton, Washington

It’s been a busy couple of weeks, but I’m finally home and ready to share! I ended my two weeks of working out of town with John and Alli’s wonderful wedding in Colton Washington. The Ceremony took place at St. Gall Church and the reception was held at Red Barn Farms. The weather was perfect, the food  by Happy Day Catering was amazing and everything went so smoothly! Between the unveiling ceremony at Red Barn Farms, the Catholic mass and wedding ceremony at St. Gall, posed photos with the Impala on the Palouse and the amazing reception with the super fun and energetic Dudley Manlove Quartet I’ve got so many images to sort through and share, but here’s a little teaser!

Megan and Quinton’s Spokane Skate Park Graffiti Wedding

Urban graffiti wedding photos? Well, you don’t see that every day! Megan and Quinton gave me the awesome opportunity to capture something truly unique prior to their wedding at La Belle Vie in Spokane Valley! When our mutual friend Tyler sent them my way I couldn’t wait for their wedding day to happen. They told me right off the bat that they wanted some unconventional wedding photos in addition to the traditional poses. I couldn’t argue with that! Over the course of the last six months or so Megan, Quinton and I have been exchanging photos of graffiti under bridges and down dark alleyways. Not your standard couple at the altar poses. As a creative mind I loved every moment of it! We met up at The Spokane Parkade for an unveiling ceremony and then booked it over to Spokane’s UTF (Under The Freeway) Skate Park before their beautiful ceremony at La Belle Vie in Spokane Valley. I’m hoping to have a complete wrap upposted soon, but until then please enjoy these unique wedding photos!

See the Complete Wedding!

Hiring a Second Photographer Vs. Assistant – Wedding Photography

“What’s the difference between a second photographer and an assistant” and “Should I have a Second Photographer at my wedding?” are two of my most frequently asked questions and it’s time they get their own blog!

The Second Photographer

A second photographer is a trained wedding and event photographer who is able to work independently to accurately capture the intricate details of your wedding day. My second photographers are usually independent wedding photographers themselves and my years of experience have taught me how to be very selective in choosing who to work with. I look for someone with a style similar to my own, but with a unique eye that will help to deliver a slightly different perspective to your photos.

One of the most important aspects of a having second photographer is our ability to give you greater photo coverage and depth. While my second photographer focuses on the Groom and Groomsmen getting ready (or sneaking off to toss a football or what have you), I’m able to spend most of my time with the Bride and Bridesmaids to capture every intricate detail. Also, using a second photographer for the ceremony allows us to capture multiple angles to ensure that we don’t miss the perfect shot while minimizing how much we need to move around.

When it comes time for the posed and bridal party shots, the second photographer generally plays the role of my assistant, but also continues to capture those candid and personal shots that may otherwise be missed.

The Assistant

The assistant is essentially a “photographer in training” and their purpose is to be with me at all times to help with lighting, organization, and workflow. For the larger photos (bridal party, family, etc.), they are my second set of eyes. They look for loose strands of hair, misplaced hands, and other imperfections. Depending on their skill level an assistant may take candid photos or detail shots, but their overall role is still an assistant capacity. They mind my equipment and carry my ladder so I can get all of the best angles. They get to move around light stands and chase down your groomsmen or grandparents who wandered off to visit with guests and family. An assistant is very helpful to me, but they rarely increase the amount of finished wedding photos that you receive and they don’t necessarily do a whole lot to speed up the formal wedding photography process. This can be a big concern if you are doing your formal wedding photos during a rushed cocktail hour.

At your wedding there are so intricate details and moments to capture. No matter how talented a photographer is, a second shooter will always make a positive contribution to your wedding day. Even if you are on the fence about it, you know you want to give yourself every opportunity to get the best photos possible. I highly recommend adding a second photographer to your wedding package. You only get married once, so make sure I’ve got you covered from every angle!

A New Year’s Eve Wedding at LaBelle Vie in Greenacres, Washington

On New Year’s Eve of 2011 I had the privilege of photographing Whitney & Chase’s themed wedding at La Belle Vie in Greenacres, Washington. I’d been planning for this winter wedding for months! The Bride and Groom had so many fantastic ideas that I couldn’t wait to see in action. After all, who doesn’t love a Mafia Themed Wedding! Everything came together beautifully; from the hospitality of the fairly new venue, to the homemade pink lemonade wedding cake and custom altar built by the grooms family. Despite the cold, wet, and dark weather; La Belle Vie provided a warm inviting backdrop that went well with the mafia themed outfits for the groomsmen… right down to the awesome pool and card tables in the “man cave”.

Winter weddings are always fun, but shooting in a single building venue poses a challenge to even the most experienced wedding photographers. You always have to remain vigilant to make sure the bride and groom don’t accidentally interact. For a wedding like this, I like to utilize a second photographer to make sure that someone is always on guard. For this Spokane wedding, I was able to focus on the bridesmaids getting ready in the upstairs bridal area while my second photographer kept the groomsmen occupied with posed photos in the “man cave”. Everything worked out to perfection and we managed to keep the groom’s prying eyes off his lovely bride to be!

Wedding Photos Before The Ceremony – The New Trend

As the “traditional” wedding approach has fallen to the wayside, an increasing number of brides are choosing to take their formal wedding photos on their wedding day, prior to the actual ceremony. There are many advantages to this newer trend and this article looks at some of the reasons how and why brides are making the choice (you can find the Pros and Cons of Pre-Ceremony Wedding Photos in my earlier article). As a Eugene, OR and Spokane, WA Wedding Photographer, my goal is to provide options and make sure that your special day is remembered exactly how you want it to be!

As society has shifted away from the traditional pre-marriage lifestyle to a more modern approach (extended engagements, living together prior to marriage, etc), so has the “traditional” wedding approach. Now, more than ever, couples are introducing innovative and unique concepts to their special day. Taking formal wedding photos prior to the ceremony is a request that I hear regularly. While some feel that it takes away from the “first look” that you remember from a bride walking down the aisle, there are ways to capture that “first look” in a more intimate and custom pre-ceremony setting.

When wedding photos are done prior to the ceremony I include a ‘first look’ or ‘unveiling’ session with my wedding photography packages. This session can be done with just the bride and groom or it can involve family and close friends as well. Generally, the groom will stand with his back to the bride as she walks into the room. Once the mood is set, and everything is in place, the groom will turn around for the desired ‘first look’ reaction. I will be there to capture that special moment before everyone is ushered out so the bride and groom can spend some alone time together. This is a benefit that you don’t have at the altar, allowing you both an intimate moment that you may not receive until long after the last champagne toast. You can hug, you can kiss, or you can exchange precious words with each other that will always be remembered. After the one-on-one time is complete, there will still be plenty of time to take the formal wedding photos before the ceremony.

Honestly, when all is said and done, the choice is yours on your wedding day; my goal is to capture your special moments so they can be shared and remembered for a lifetime. However, if you choose the traditional approach, remember to allow time for everything that you hope to accomplish and then some. This especially applies if you hope to do your photos between the ceremony and the reception at another location. Things get delayed and sometimes people aren’t where they’re supposed to be. If you’re prepared and if your photographer is prepared, your wedding day will be as magical as you’ve always dreamed.

Stay tuned for my next article! I’ll be highlighting Eugene, OR Engagement Photography Locations. I just finished a fantastic engagement photography session on the University of Oregon campus!
