University of Oregon Elopement – Schnitzer Art Museum

LaDuke Photography Locations SM

The Jordan Schnitzer Art Museum on the University of Oregon Campus made for a beautiful backdrop for C & D’s fall elopement. Weddings don’t have to be a huge event with lots of people and expensive stressful decisions to make. These two lovely people decided all they needed were each other (and their adorable kiddo who was a real trooper despite having a tummy ache). My 2nd shooter and I had a wonderful time capturing this quick intimate wedding and can’t wait for our next elopement!

Inn at Diamond Woods – Wedding

The Inn at Diamond Woods Golf Course in Monroe, Oregon is a beautiful wedding venue. LaDuke Photography was lucky enough to photograph a fall wedding here. J&W wanted a small intimate venue with a beautiful backdrop and they found it. The ceremony took place outside overlooking the golf course. Due to a wet forecast after cocktail hour everyone moved indoors for dinner. Afterward dancing and a bonfire were enjoyed on the patio by all of the guests who decided to stay late into the chilly evening. The Inn at Diamond Woods is a beautiful venue with room for 200 guests. If you are looking for a neat understated venue somewhere between Eugene and Corvallis this place is wonderful.

Where to Register for Your Wedding

Where to Register for your Wedding O

Today I had a bride ask me a question that I haven’t given much thought to, “Where should we register for our wedding?” After a little bit of thought I made a list of places that couples may register for their wedding at traditionally. Nordstrom, Macy’s, Target, maybe even Cabella’s or REI, right? As a wedding photographer it’s not usually at the front of my mind.

Then I got to thinking, what if you could register for ANYTHING you wanted without sending an annoying list that reads like this, “We are registered at Shopko, Kmart, 7-11, H&M, Steinmart, Home Depot and Toys ‘r’ Us.” and then I had a moment of inspiration! has a Wedding Registry! And if I’ve learned anything about amazon in the not so distant past it is that you can find nearly anything on there AND add products from sites that are not listed on Amazon such as Etsy stores. They even have a “Top 100” and check lists to make sure you aren’t forgetting anything if you are combining your households for the first time. How GENIUS! Why not make it easy on yourself and your guests, they can just log on, order and have it shipped to them or directly to you. Long story short, you CAN register everywhere thanks to the internet!

This is definitely a tip I will be passing on, from Amazon gift cards to Zumba on DVD they’ve got you covered.

Eugene Wedding Photographer – A Glowing Review

photography logo color on whiteAs a wedding photographer in the infinitely creative city of Eugene, Oregon I face many challenges, one of which is how to make myself stand out above the rest of the wonderful creative types that swarm around the Willamette Valley. I love being very hands on and creating relationships with my clients. Word of mouth and reviews are my greatest form of advertizing. I just love waking up to find a new review like the one below.

“We have had Lacey LaDuke do both our wedding and our maternity photos, and are now just counting the days until we can have her take newborn photos of our little guy when he comes. Lacey is very interactive and wonderful to work with. She’s got a priceless personality. She’s great company during the shoots, and still very professional. I couldn’t have asked for a better photographer to work with, and am excited to have her be the eyes behind our pictures.” – Noah Tinney

Noah and Jordan came to me VERY last minute for their wedding at Fern Ridge Reservoir and though things didn’t go exactly as planned (darn the wind and rain!) we still had a great time. What to do if it rains on your wedding day? Well, I’ll bring you an umbrella and we’ll get through it, but I also offer a free re-shoot of the formal portraits to make sure we get images that you will LOVE. I was so elated when Noah called me up after the wedding and told me it was time for maternity photos. We ran out ot Armitage Park and played around in the water and just had a great time. I can’t wait to meet baby Alexander when he arrives!

Rustic Woodsy Engagement – Fall Creek, Oregon

Spring has finally come to the Willamette Valley! Recently I had the opportunity to go to Bedrock Campground on Fall Creek to do an engagement session for Alison and Corey. They chose this rustic photo location to go along with their intimate outdoor wedding that is coming up this July at Shotgun Creek State Park. I can’t wait to see what little details the wedding planner, Imagine Weddings and Events has up their sleeve. That coupled with the super amazing baked goods made by the bride herself is a recipe that couldn’t keep me away! Stay tuned!

Florence, Oregon – Beach Engagement Photos

April was a fantastic month! I finally got to meet Summer and Adam who booked me through their wedding planner Krysta Albert of Imagine! Weddings and Events. They are from Peoria, IL and knew that they wanted photos that you can’t get in Illinois so we headed out to Heceta Beach for some Oregon coast engagement photos. We had a great time playing in the sand on what was a beautiful Sunday afternoon. They are such a fun down to earth couple, I am so excited for their autumn wedding at The Country Inn in Eugene this October!

Hiring a Second Photographer Vs. Assistant – Wedding Photography

“What’s the difference between a second photographer and an assistant” and “Should I have a Second Photographer at my wedding?” are two of my most frequently asked questions and it’s time they get their own blog!

The Second Photographer

A second photographer is a trained wedding and event photographer who is able to work independently to accurately capture the intricate details of your wedding day. My second photographers are usually independent wedding photographers themselves and my years of experience have taught me how to be very selective in choosing who to work with. I look for someone with a style similar to my own, but with a unique eye that will help to deliver a slightly different perspective to your photos.

One of the most important aspects of a having second photographer is our ability to give you greater photo coverage and depth. While my second photographer focuses on the Groom and Groomsmen getting ready (or sneaking off to toss a football or what have you), I’m able to spend most of my time with the Bride and Bridesmaids to capture every intricate detail. Also, using a second photographer for the ceremony allows us to capture multiple angles to ensure that we don’t miss the perfect shot while minimizing how much we need to move around.

When it comes time for the posed and bridal party shots, the second photographer generally plays the role of my assistant, but also continues to capture those candid and personal shots that may otherwise be missed.

The Assistant

The assistant is essentially a “photographer in training” and their purpose is to be with me at all times to help with lighting, organization, and workflow. For the larger photos (bridal party, family, etc.), they are my second set of eyes. They look for loose strands of hair, misplaced hands, and other imperfections. Depending on their skill level an assistant may take candid photos or detail shots, but their overall role is still an assistant capacity. They mind my equipment and carry my ladder so I can get all of the best angles. They get to move around light stands and chase down your groomsmen or grandparents who wandered off to visit with guests and family. An assistant is very helpful to me, but they rarely increase the amount of finished wedding photos that you receive and they don’t necessarily do a whole lot to speed up the formal wedding photography process. This can be a big concern if you are doing your formal wedding photos during a rushed cocktail hour.

At your wedding there are so intricate details and moments to capture. No matter how talented a photographer is, a second shooter will always make a positive contribution to your wedding day. Even if you are on the fence about it, you know you want to give yourself every opportunity to get the best photos possible. I highly recommend adding a second photographer to your wedding package. You only get married once, so make sure I’ve got you covered from every angle!

A New Year’s Eve Wedding at LaBelle Vie in Greenacres, Washington

On New Year’s Eve of 2011 I had the privilege of photographing Whitney & Chase’s themed wedding at La Belle Vie in Greenacres, Washington. I’d been planning for this winter wedding for months! The Bride and Groom had so many fantastic ideas that I couldn’t wait to see in action. After all, who doesn’t love a Mafia Themed Wedding! Everything came together beautifully; from the hospitality of the fairly new venue, to the homemade pink lemonade wedding cake and custom altar built by the grooms family. Despite the cold, wet, and dark weather; La Belle Vie provided a warm inviting backdrop that went well with the mafia themed outfits for the groomsmen… right down to the awesome pool and card tables in the “man cave”.

Winter weddings are always fun, but shooting in a single building venue poses a challenge to even the most experienced wedding photographers. You always have to remain vigilant to make sure the bride and groom don’t accidentally interact. For a wedding like this, I like to utilize a second photographer to make sure that someone is always on guard. For this Spokane wedding, I was able to focus on the bridesmaids getting ready in the upstairs bridal area while my second photographer kept the groomsmen occupied with posed photos in the “man cave”. Everything worked out to perfection and we managed to keep the groom’s prying eyes off his lovely bride to be!

Unique wedding plans? Bold ideas and bright colors? Inspiring venues?…Sign me up! LaDuke Photography loves weddings that are as unique and creative as you are!

I’ve got select openings for Summer and Fall of 2012 and I’ve started booking 2012-2013 Winter weddings in both Spokane, Washington and Eugene, Oregon. Contact me today to check my availability and get a free custom quote! Read more about my wedding packages and rates here.
